The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old man, identified as Rilwan ‘M’, over alleged involvement in the illicit drug trade in the Apata area of Ibadan.
The suspect was arrested on Friday, September 11, 2026, at about 8:00 a.m., following credible intelligence received by the Command.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, on Sunday, the arrest was carried out by surveillance operatives attached to the Iyaganku Area Command.
The operatives, acting on the intelligence, reportedly commenced targeted surveillance operations which eventually led to the arrest of the suspect.
Items recovered from the suspect included a quantity of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, a white crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine, as well as other substances suspected to be dangerous drugs.
The Police said the suspect is currently in custody and cooperating with investigators as preliminary investigations continue.
The investigation, according to the Command, is aimed at determining the source of the suspected illicit drugs, establishing the extent of the suspect’s involvement in the drug trade and identifying other individuals who may be connected to the activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, psc, mnips, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to sustain intelligence-led operations against drug trafficking and other forms of criminality across the state.
Olugbenga noted that illicit drugs remain a significant catalyst for various forms of crime and criminal activities, stressing that the Command would continue to identify and disrupt the supply chains of elements that fuel criminality, particularly illicit drugs.
He further assured residents that the Command would strengthen intelligence-led policing and proactive operations as part of efforts to safeguard lives and property across Oyo State.
The Police said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the preliminary investigation.
The Command also appealed to members of the public to continue providing credible and actionable information that could assist the Police in strengthening the fight against crime and criminality in the state.
