
Residents of Innayin Community are grappling with fear after a wild elephant reportedly invaded the area on Thursday afternoon, leaving one person dead and another missing.

The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. on April 23, was confirmed by the Oyo State Police Command. According to authorities, officers responded swiftly after receiving a distress call and mobilized to the scene alongside local vigilantes and hunters.

According to a release by DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, (anipr),
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Oyo State Police Command, on arrival, the body of 45-year-old Ibrahim Tijani was discovered in a nearby bush. Police said his injuries were consistent with an attack by a wild animal. His remains have since been taken to General Hospital Iwere-Ile for examination and preservation.
During search operations, another resident, identified as 50-year-old Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, was reported missing after reportedly encountering the same animal. Police say efforts are ongoing to locate him.
Authorities have urged residents of Innayin and surrounding communities to remain calm but vigilant, warning them to avoid the affected area and report any sightings of the elephant immediately.
The police added that they are working closely with wildlife experts, including the National Park Service Nigeria, to ensure the situation is handled safely and in line with conservation laws.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reassured the public that security personnel are actively managing the situation.
“We understand the concerns this incident has generated within the community. Our officers are fully on ground working with relevant stakeholders to secure the area and prevent further casualties,” he said, urging residents to cooperate with authorities.
The police also appealed for continued public support, emphasizing that collaboration with security agencies remains crucial in preventing further harm as efforts continue to contain the situation.
