The Oyo State Government has called on teachers across the state to fully return to classrooms following the suspension of a one-month industrial action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT.
Recall that the national body of the NUT had directed teachers in the state to resume work on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
The appeal was made by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Segun Olayiwola, during a meeting with education stakeholders in Ibadan on Thursday.
Hon. Olayiwola urged teachers to work with government to make up for the time lost during the strike that ran from June 1 to July 1, 2026.
He assured teachers, parents and residents that the government remains fully committed to securing the safe release of the abducted teachers and pupils from Oriire Local Government Area.
“Efforts by the government and security agencies to ensure their safe return are ongoing,” the Commissioner said.
In a major boost for learning, Hon. Olayiwola disclosed that the State Executive Council has approved about ₦8.7 billion for the procurement of free textbooks for pupils in Primary One to Primary Six as well as JSS 1 to 3 across all public schools in the state.
Earlier at the meeting, the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State Wing, Comrade Kayode Salami, called on government, security agencies and host communities to strengthen security around schools, especially in vulnerable areas, to prevent a recurrence of attacks on teachers and learners.
Comrade Salami reaffirmed the union’s commitment to a cordial relationship with the Makinde administration, expressing confidence that continued collaboration would enhance quality education and provide a safer learning environment for teachers and pupils.
