Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Champions League title on Saturday, edging Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw through extra time in the 2025-26 final at the Puskás Aréna.
The French giants became only the second team in history to win back-to-back Champions League crowns. Arsenal, who ended a 22-year wait to lift the Premier League this season, were denied a first European title for a second time after their 2006 final defeat.
How it happened
Arsenal struck first, just as they did in their only previous final 20 years ago. A clearance from PSG captain Marquinhos rebounded off Leandro Trossard and fell to Kai Havertz, who drove from near halfway before firing a tight-angle shot into the roof of the net.
But PSG, like Barcelona in 2006, hit back in the second half. After holding firm for almost an hour, Arsenal’s defense cracked when Cristhian Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the penalty area, giving the holders a route back into the game.
The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra time, sending it to penalties. PSG converted all four spot-kicks, while Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães blazed the decisive penalty over the crossbar to hand PSG a 4-3 shootout victory.
The win cements PSG’s dominance in Europe and extends Arsenal’s wait for continental glory, despite their domestic success this season. Marquinhos lifted the trophy for the Parisians in Budapest.
