Chief Sanusi, in a public statement, stressed that market leadership should reflect the traditions, established selection procedures and collective preferences of traders rather than political affiliations or personal interests.

He described the traditional institution of Iyaloja as more than a political appointment, noting that it represents generations of market leadership, commercial heritage, grassroots unity and the dignity of traders whose daily activities sustain the state’s economy.

The respected Ibadan chief expressed concern over the controversy involving Alhaja Saratu Konibaje and Alhaja Abeo, saying the situation raised fundamental questions about the independence of traditional market institutions and the legitimacy of leadership selection processes.

Chief Sanusi noted that allegations had emerged suggesting that Alhaja Saratu Konibaje’s alleged unwillingness to align with the political structure of Governor Seyi Makinde contributed to the decision to recognize another person as Iyaloja General of Oyo State.

He, however, emphasised the need for transparent clarification of the allegations, cautioning against speculation and urging the relevant parties to provide a clear account of how the disputed leadership decision was reached.

According to him, market leadership must not be used as a reward for political loyalty or as a means of punishing individuals for maintaining their political independence.

He maintained that traders deserved to know whether their established customs, recognised selection procedures and collective preferences had been respected in determining who should occupy the position.

Chief Sanusi further pointed out  that the office of Iyaloja belongs to the heritage and interests of the market community, adding that its legitimacy should be founded on recognized traditions, lawful procedures and the confidence of the traders themselves.

The Okanlomo Oodua therefore called on all parties involved in the controversy to embrace peaceful dialogue, respect the independence of market associations and ensure that the process leading to the emergence or recognition of market leaders is transparent.

He stressed that the voices, dignity and freedom of association of market traders must be protected, warning against any action capable of undermining their collective interests.

Chief Sanusi urged stakeholders to prioritize unity and peaceful coexistence within the state’s markets, noting that market associations play important roles in economic development, community relations and the livelihoods of thousands of residents.

He concluded by praying for the continued preservation of peace, unity and prosperity in Oyo State, particularly among the traders and market communities whose contributions remain vital to the state’s economic and social development.
