Coalition of Pro-Democracy Groups for a Better Nigeria has congratulated nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, on the occasion of his 90th birthday.
A statement by the coalition’s National Coordinator, Comrade Awa Bamiji, described Soyinka as a global phenomenon, principled fighter against injustice and voice of the voiceless.
He noted that Soyinka is an apostle of the June 12 struggle and leader of Nigeria’s democratic struggles, as well as foremost ambassador for civil society organisations.
Awa called on President Bola Tinubu to “appreciate this uncommon hero of democracy and declare July 13 Wole Soyinka Day, in genuine appreciation of his contributions to the development of the country.”
“We all know that Professor Wole Soyinka doesn’t like to celebrate his birthdays, but it is high time the president, who is also a June 12 advocate, join us in celebrating him in a special way.
“For Kongi, as Soyinka is fondly called, this is a celebration of an impactful life, good health, academic excellence, wisdom, African arts and culture,” he added.
Awa prayed that Almighty God will continue to bless Soyinka with good health and sound mind.
Soyinka will clock 90 on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
