The Chairman, House Committee on Transport in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Babajide Gabriel Adebayo has called for collaborative synergy from stakeholders in the transport sector to help to achieve international best practices.
Hon Babajide made the call on Thursday at a one day workshop on transport management in Oyo State, held at Marchfort Court Yard Hotel and Suites, Agodi, Ibadan.
The legislator said the issue became imperative in order to set the record straight and move the sector forward, just as he assured that the committee would take necessary steps on the issue.
According to him, the workshop, themed, Transport Management in Oyo State in Conformity with International Best Practices”, was aimed at bringing stakeholders in the transport sector together to discuss and identify challenges, provide innovative solutions with a view to develop strategies for efficient and sustainable transport system, that will bring the sector on the same page with governor Seyi Makinde’s developmental agendas of moving the state forward.
“Among constitutional responsibility of the House of Assembly is to make laws and carry out oversight functions on the activities of Ministries, Department and Agencies of Government, this will facilitate a better understanding among the three arms of government which include the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.”
“To exercise the power of oversight effectively, the House of Assembly through its committee on transport organised the workshop to enable all key stakeholders in the transport sector have inputs on the issue with the sole aim of advancing the sector “.
Hon Babajide Gabriel assured that all the recommendations and submission at the programme would be looked into for upward action that will facilitate development for the sector.
In his lecture, the resource person, Dr. Adetunji Adeyemi from the department of Transport Management, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso said the relevance of an efficient transportation system to the overall development of the economy cannot be overemphasize, adding that it has been established through research that there exist a positive correlation between economic development and an efficient transportation system.
While describing transportation system as omnipresent in the modern society, people take them for granted until something goes wrong.
According to him, the sector which is one of the most important has to be adequately satisfied in any society if meaningful development in operations and production activities is to be achieved.
He said improving road transport system has a ripple effect on any economy, adding that an average citizen uses the road mode of transportation daily for production and development.
He said importance of road transport in the state include accessibility and connectivity, economy growth, employment opportunities, Tourism and hospitality, social integration and Mobility, emergency response and disaster management, infrastructure development, internally generated revenue, law and policies which aims to protect the transport sector from lawlessness.
Speaking, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin while appreciating the the guest lecturer and the participants described the workshop as insightful adding that so many things have been revealed to them in the workshop which will help to move the state forward.
In his speech, Hon. Akintunde Olajide Emmanuel (AKT) thanked the stakeholders and the team for their presence, assuring that the programme will bring new development to the transport system in the state.
Also speaking, Engr. Babatunde Folasayo from Chattered Institute of Logistics and Transport, South West said there is the need to establish data base and proper registration for the sector in order to improve the system.
“The essence of putting up Data Base and creating bus terminus is to advance the course of the sector and achieve development. This in turn will strengthen the security architecture in the transport sector.
He emphasized on the need to look into relevant laws to guide the activities of motorists and members of the transport sector.
Representatives of Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) VIO, Ministry of Works and Transport, Park Managers
and others were represented at the workshop.
Lawmakers present included Hon Olasunkanmi Babalola, Hon. Razak Mabaje, Hon Owolabi Olusola, Hon. Kehinde Taofeek Olatunde and others.
