A new chapter in policing has begun in Oyo State as Commissioner of Police (CP) Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga officially assumes office as the 49th Commissioner of Police for the state command.

He succeeds Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Olufemi Haruna, who served as the 48th Commissioner of Police since April 1, 2025.

CP Olugbenga, a seasoned officer with over three decades of experience in the Nigeria Police Force, brings to the role a reputation for professionalism, strategic leadership, and dedication to duty. His appointment is seen as a significant boost to ongoing efforts to strengthen security and enhance public trust in law enforcement across the state.
A graduate of Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the new commissioner has undergone extensive professional training in leadership, operations, and community policing. His credentials include courses at the Police Staff College in Jos, the Police College in Kaduna, and the National Institute of Police Studies in Abuja.
Since joining the force in June 1994 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police, CP Olugbenga has served in diverse operational, investigative, and administrative roles across several states, including Lagos, Delta, Borno, Kano, and Oyo.
Notably, he held key positions such as Police Component Commander under Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno State, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Oyo, and Commissioner of Police in charge of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) at Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Colleagues describe him as a proactive and results-driven leader with a strong track record in crime prevention and conflict management. His service has earned him multiple commendations for bravery and excellence, particularly in high-risk and conflict-prone areas.
Beyond the badge, CP Olugbenga is known for his passion for writing, reading, dancing, and mentoring—qualities that observers say could further humanize policing and foster stronger community relations in Oyo State.
The Oyo State Police Command expressed confidence that under his leadership, security of lives and property will be further strengthened, while public confidence in policing will improve through purposeful and strategic initiatives.
Residents are encouraged to continue cooperating with law enforcement and to utilize emergency lines provided by the command, including the toll-free call response center (615) and dedicated control room numbers.
The appointment signals renewed commitment by the police authorities to ensuring safety and stability in Oyo State, as CP Olugbenga steps into his new role with a clear mandate to build on existing gains and chart a progressive path forward.
