The Ogun State Government has announced plans to demolish and reconstruct the state’s legislative and commissioners’ quarters, which were originally built in 1976.

The Commissioner for Housing, Jamiu Omoniyi, disclosed this in Abeokuta, explaining that the decision followed a recent technical assessment by the ministry, which found the buildings to be structurally unsafe and uneconomical to maintain despite decades of repairs.

Omoniyi said the move aligns with the National Building Code of Nigeria (2006), which requires public structures to meet minimum safety and functionality standards.

He explained that the affected quarters have exceeded their useful lifespan and now require either complete reconstruction or major rehabilitation, noting that continued maintenance has become wasteful and unsustainable.

“The existing legislative and commissioners’ quarters were constructed in 1976 — nearly 50 years ago,” Omoniyi said. “Over the years, successive administrations have spent enormous sums on repairs and maintenance, but these efforts have yielded diminishing results.”

He added that the redevelopment of the facilities will provide modern, safe, and cost-effective accommodation for government officials, in line with the state’s broader urban renewal and infrastructure upgrade agenda.
