The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Oyo State Branch, has threatened to embark on strike action if the state government fails to address the lingering crisis at the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH-TH), Ogbomoso, within the next 15 days.

The association’s chairman, Dr. Happy Adedapo, issued the warning at a press conference held at the NMA House, Total Garden, Ibadan, on Tuesday, September 24, 2025.

Dr. Adedapo explained that the press briefing was convened to highlight the persistent professional and financial challenges faced by medical practitioners at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, despite repeated efforts to draw the state government’s attention to their plight.

He noted that members of the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) at the institution had abandoned classrooms since July 28, 2025, over poor welfare conditions and structural collapse within the system, leading to the paralysis of both clinical and academic activities.

“We want to place it on record that resident doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, have been on indefinite strike since July 29, 2025. Almost two months after, there has been no tangible commitment from the state government toward resolving this regrettable and avoidable crisis, which has left a once vibrant institution on the verge of collapse,” Dr. Adedapo said.

According to him, the Oyo State Government has deliberately ignored the association’s patriotic gestures aimed at addressing the welfare concerns of doctors in its employment. He disclosed that a 15-day ultimatum, effective September 18, 2025, had been issued to the government, stressing that industrial harmony could no longer be guaranteed thereafter.

“If the government fails to address our irreducible minimum demands on or before October 2, 2025, we will be left with no choice but to down tools,” he declared.

The NMA chairman listed the association’s demands to include:

Immediate implementation of the CONMESS salary structure for all doctors, prompt payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund, Immediate employment of resident doctors, and implementation of the 2024 National Minimum Wage without delay.

While assuring the public of doctors’ continued commitment to delivering quality healthcare, Dr. Adedapo urged the state government to act urgently in order to prevent a total collapse of medical services at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital.
