The following are some of the reasons:

Orlando Owoh did not merely play highlife—he reinvented it. While many contemporaries stuck to traditional structures, he developed a subgenre he proudly called Kennery music—a highlife variant with deeper Yoruba percussions, fluid guitar riffs, and philosophical lyrical delivery. His Kennery sound fused juju, Afrobeat, palm wine music, and folk idioms, creating a genre uniquely his own that was impossible to imitate.

2. Raw, Soulful Voice Full of Emotion and Identity:

Dr. Owoh’s distinctive voice carried a rugged, earthy quality that was both emotive and unmistakable. His vocals were not polished in the studio style of modern pop stars, but instead, raw and authentic, reflecting the truth of his message. 3. Deep Cultural Rootedness and Use of Proverbs

One of the most outstanding features of his music was his deep embedding in Yoruba culture. His lyrics often contained Yoruba proverbs, idioms, and parables that conveyed profound moral, social, and political messages. Unlike many artistes who leaned toward Western influences, Orlando Owoh proudly celebrated his roots and used his platform to educate and preserve Yoruba heritage through song.

4. Commitment to Social Justice and the Plight of the Common Man

Orlando Owoh was more than an entertainer—he was a social commentator and voice of the oppressed. His songs often touched on themes of poverty, corruption, oppression, betrayal, justice, and mortality. Through albums like “Iya Mi” and “Money for Hand, Back for Ground”, he addressed societal decay with fearless honesty. His commitment to speaking truth to power earned him deep respect among both the elites and the downtrodden.

5. Prolific Songwriting and Longevity in the Music Industry

Owoh’s career spanned over four decades, during which he released dozens of albums and hundreds of songs. His music was African in spirit, structure, and soul, making it appealing to world music lovers seeking truth and originality.

Orlando Owoh was a master storyteller. Each of his songs was a narrative journey—some autobiographical, others reflective of societal issues. His lyrics combined philosophical insight with street wisdom, often questioning human behavior, life’s uncertainties, and spiritual values. He sang with the wisdom of a griot and the empathy of a pastor.

A natural performer, Owoh commanded attention on stage. He led his band, African Kenneries International, with charisma and discipline. His live performances were energetic, engaging, and often spiritual in nature. He infused performances with humor, wisdom, and rhythm, leaving audiences enthralled. His ability to connect with both elite and grassroots audiences further distinguished him as a true people’s artist.

9. Influence on Multiple Generations of Musicians:

Owoh inspired an entire generation of musicians—not just in highlife, but in other genres like Afrobeat, Fuji, and contemporary Afropop. Artists admired his bold lyrical content, rhythmic experimentation, and artistic independence.
