A petroleum tanker carrying 33,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) on Thursday night lost control and collided with other vehicles, resulting in a massive explosion in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

Vanguard learnt that the incident occurred at Celica Junction on the New Ife Expressway in Ibadan.

It was reported the tanker driver lost control due to brake failure, crashing into other vehicles on the road.

The impact ignited a large fire that engulfed the tanker and surrounding vehicles.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, however, the fire affected the trailer tanker and a car, while a Jeep was pushed into a nearby gutter by the trailer.

Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service Reform and Agency Chairman, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande said the fire incident was reported at exactly 18:27 on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

He said, “A crew of firemen led by ACFS Adeniyi Adesina was promptly deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a petrol trailer tanker loaded with 33,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and a car engulfed in flames.”

“The firemen quickly took action by applying a chemical foam compound, preventing the fire from spreading to the nearby NNPC petrol station and surrounding properties.”

“The fire was ultimately extinguished in collaboration with officers from the Federal Fire Service.”

“The incident was attributed to a brake failure in the truck, which caused the vehicle to lose control, hit a Prado Jeep and another car, and subsequently catch fire.”

“Although no casualties were reported, the fire impacted the trailer tanker and a car, while a Jeep was forced into a nearby gutter by the trailer.”

“The fire services successfully saved the NNPC filling station and nearby properties from further damage.”

Akinwande reassured the public that they can continue their daily activities without fear, as the fire has been completely extinguished.
