Governor Seyi Makinde has been advised to increase financial grants to Shooting Stars Football Club of Ibadan in order for the team to secure African continental tickets ahead next year football season.
Speaking in Ibadan on Monday, a former board member of the Oluyole Warriors Oritsetimehin Eweyeju said the twenty five thousand naira grant being given to the team is inadequate to secure the continental ticket the team is expected to get.
He explained that the #20m amount is insufficient to pay the salaries and bonus of the players let alone securing a continental ticket adding that what the team requires is something in the region of fifty to seventy million as monthly grants.
Eweyeju stated that this #70m will enable the team recruit quality and experienced players as obtained in Enyimba, Rivers United and Rangers pointing out that this will also make the former 1975 African Cup Winner Cup champion pay salaries in the region of eight hundred thousand naira in order to motivate the players of the team.
He revealed that players in the fold of Enyimba, Rangers as well Rivers United earn around one million, five hundred thousand naira (#1,500) hence Governor Makinde should armed the management of Shooting Starsin order to be able to pay their players something reasonable in the area of eight hundred thousand if it can not pay up to (#1,500) arguing that the minimum should be four hundred thousand naira.
The former Shooting Stars board member between 2006 and 2007 during the reign of Governor Adebayo Alao Akala reminisced that the team got fifty million naira every two months noting that with this they were able to engage quality players besides paying good bonuses and allowances which enabled the team post good results then.
Eweyeju said further that Engr Makinde should endeavor to release substantial amount of money to Shooting Stars to enab the team perform stressing that what 3sc gets at the moment is not enough to make it recruit quality players apart from paying them as this is just okay to make the team survive and not post good results as envisaged by the people and Governor of Oyo state.
