As Nigeria celebrates its 64th independence anniversary today October 1, 2024, Nigerians have been urged to remain united and live in peace and harmony to propel the nation forward.
This call to action was contained in a statement by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of UcheKinze Nigeria Limited, Sir Kinze Isaac Okonkwo, who described the anniversary as a time for renewed commitment by all Nigerians.
The statement reads in part: “As Nigerians celebrate the 64th anniversary of our independence from British colonial rule, it is a momentous occasion for Africa’s most populous nation. Over the past six decades, Nigeria has grown into a regional powerhouse, rich in cultural diversity and natural resources.”
He noted that Nigeria’s journey toward nationhood has been marked by both triumphs and challenges, shaping the country’s political, social, and economic landscape.
Recalling the nation’s history, Sir Okonkwo reflected on Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960, after years of nationalist movements led by figures such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and Ahmadu Bello. The diverse ethnic composition of the country, with over 250 ethnic groups, posed a challenge to forming a cohesive national identity. At independence, Nigeria adopted a parliamentary system of government, with Nnamdi Azikiwe as the first president and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa as the prime minister.
He further highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s transition to civil rule in 1999, marking the beginning of the Fourth Republic. He acknowledged that while the country has experienced democratic elections, there have been controversies, including allegations of electoral fraud and instances of political violence. However, despite these challenges, Nigeria’s democracy has remained largely intact over the past 25 years.
“Today, we proudly celebrate the 64th independence anniversary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria—a momentous occasion that marks our journey toward self-determination, unity, and progress. On this day, we reflect on our rich history, the resilience of our people, and the strides we have made in various sectors despite the challenges we continue to face,” Sir Okonkwo said.
He paid tribute to the nation’s founding fathers, emphasizing that they envisioned a Nigeria where diversity would be a strength, and where every citizen would have the opportunity to thrive. He renewed his call for peace, democracy, and inclusivity as the pillars of the nation.
“As we commemorate this significant milestone, let us acknowledge the remarkable contributions of Nigerians across all sectors—our farmers, teachers, healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, and many others who tirelessly uplift our communities. Their dedication and spirit of innovation inspire hope for a brighter future.”
Sir Okonkwo also acknowledged the ongoing challenges facing the nation, including insecurity, economic hardship, and social inequality, and stressed the need for collective effort to address these issues. “It is imperative that we live and work together in peace and unity to build a Nigeria that reflects the aspirations of all its citizens,” he said.
Looking toward the future, Sir Okonkwo urged Nigerians to embrace a shared vision for a prosperous Nigeria, where the rule of law prevails, opportunities abound, and every individual can contribute to and benefit from collective success.
“On this Independence Day, I urge all Nigerians to take pride in our nation and to play an active role in shaping its destiny. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient Nigeria for generations to come,” he concluded.
