The recent development in Anglican Commercial Grammar School, Osogbo Osun State, has sent shockwaves through the student community and the Old Students’ Association. The school, once a beacon of academic excellence, is now struggling to survive due to a severe shortage of teachers and infrastructure. In a bold move, the Old Students’ Association has come forward to call for teacher recruitment, introducing the concept of ALUMNI TEACHERS.
This initiative highlights the government’s failure to provide quality education, a symptom of a larger problem. The government’s neglect of public schools, coupled with its focus on mega schools, has led to a situation where Old Students’ bodies are taking over the responsibility of providing education. The lack of recruitment of teachers and diversion of basic infrastructure has left Anglican Commercial Grammar School, Osogbo, in a state of despair.
The government’s failure to allow Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to function effectively has contributed to the problem. The absence of PTA teachers has created a vacuum, now being filled by ALUMNI TEACHERS. This is a clear indication that the government has abdicated its responsibility to provide quality education.
As an alumnus of Anglican Commercial Grammar School, Osogbo, I’m deeply concerned about the future of our alma mater. I urge the Osun State Government to wake up from its slumber and rescue the education system. The future of our children, the state, and the nation is at stake. The recruitment of qualified teachers and provision of basic infrastructure are non-negotiable.
I call on the government to:
- Immediately recruit or complete the ongoing recruitment of qualified teachers to fill gaps in public schools
- Provide basic infrastructure, including classrooms, libraries, and laboratories
- Allow PTAs to function effectively and support their efforts
- Ensure public schools receive adequate funding for quality education
The education of our children is too important to be left to ALUMNI bodies only. It’s time for the government to take responsibility and provide quality education to all. Our children’s future and the nation’s depend on it.
As an Old Student of Anglican Commercial Grammar School, Osogbo, I implore the government to remember the countless great men and women who have graduated from our school and gone on to make a mark in their respective fields. Let us not forget the sacrifices made by our parents and ancestors to ensure that we receive quality education.
Let us join hands to rescue our schools and our future!
