The Sabiganna of Iganna Kingdom in Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oyo State, His Royal Majesty Oba Soliu Oyemonla Tella Azeez (Agunloye IV), has declared that democracy in Nigeria will continue to face setbacks unless traditional rulers are granted constitutional roles in governance.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with Oodua News in his palace on Monday, the respected monarch emphasized that the full benefits and values of democracy can only be realized when traditional rulers are formally recognized and empowered by the constitution to contribute meaningfully at the grassroots level.
“Democracy cannot thrive without constitutional roles for traditional rulers, who are the closest authorities to the people,” Oba Oyemonla said. “It is high time the government engaged us meaningfully. Traditional rulers are well respected and trusted by their communities. We know the terrain, the people, and the challenges of our localities better than anyone else.”
He noted that traditional rulers have long been involved in crucial responsibilities such as dispute resolution, crisis management, and local development, yet they remain marginalized in governance.
“We are already doing the work, but without support or recognition. If we are constitutionally empowered, it will help consolidate democracy, promote peace, and enhance development across the country,” he added.
Oba Oyemonla called on the government to consider assigning traditional rulers roles as watchdogs, father figures, and members of advisory councils to support grassroots governance and ensure better representation of the people.
While commending the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for his developmental efforts, the monarch urged the administration to rehabilitate the Okeho-Iganna road, and many others which he described as crucial to economic activity in the region.
“The Okeho–Iganna road, which links the two local governments, Kajola and Iwajowa was last constructed during the era of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Since then, it has been neglected and is now in deplorable condition. I appeal to Governor Makinde to prioritize its reconstruction to boost trade and economic development of the area.”
On national matters, Oba Oyemonla expressed confidence in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a visionary with administrative competence. He urged Nigerians to support the president’s reform agenda in order to move the nation forward.
“President Tinubu means well for the country. Those calling for his removal in 2027 are political jobbers threatened by his progress. The president deserves our support to achieve his plans for national transformation.
