The Oyo State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety and security of all residents in the state, particularly in light of the upcoming Founders’ Day celebration of the Neo-Black Movement of Africa, also known as the Black Axe cult, scheduled for July 7.

In a statement issued on July 6, 2025, with reference number AZ:5250/OY/PPRO/VOL.6/301, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Adewale Osifeso, mnipr, emphasized the Command’s dedication to professional policing, driven by intelligence and technology, to protect lives and property across the state.
The Command called on parents, guardians, community leaders, and other influential figures in society to work collaboratively with security agencies to mitigate potential threats associated with the celebration.
The release reads in part:
“In our unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security in Oyo State, the Command wishes to alert the public to potential security risks associated with the upcoming July 7 Founders’ Day celebration of the Neo-Black Movement of Africa (Aiye Confraternity), also known as the Black Axe.”
According to the Command, credible intelligence indicates that rival cult groups may attempt to engage in violent reprisals during the event, which could result in widespread public disorder.
“Our intelligence-led policing and community partnership efforts have revealed plans by the group that may lead to serious public unrest. These may include acts of violence, retribution, or other criminal activities.”
In response, the Command has undertaken a series of proactive security measures, including sensitization sessions with hoteliers, lounge operators, and managers of studio apartments, urging them not to allow their facilities to be used for cult-related gatherings.
“It is crucial to engage our youth in meaningful conversations about the dangers of cultism and the severe legal consequences of participating in violent or unlawful activities,” the statement added.
To further bolster public safety, the Command has concluded plans to deploy officers to strategic locations across the state. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities or gatherings to the nearest police authority.
“Together, we can foster a safe environment for all residents of Oyo State. The safety and security of every citizen remains our top priority,” the PPRO stated.
