President of Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C) Dr Rafiu Ladipo has stated that the Ghana Boxing Board were negligent with regards to how they handled the case of deceased Nigerian boxer Olusegun Success Olanrewaju who died in Ghana during a boxing match.
Recalled that Olanrewaju suddenly slumped in the ring while leading in a boxing contest with his Ghanaian opponent in Accra, Ghana recently.
Speaking in Lagos in an exclusive interview, Dr Rafiu Ladipo the President of NBB of C said that the Ghanaians were very much negligent.
He explained that the Ghanaians failed to take the necessary precautionary measures before any boxing bout can take place.
“ Ordinarily, every boxer takes a medical test every six month to ascertain his or her medical fitness and another one a day before any match” Dr Ladipo pointed out.
He said further that “ the test before the boxing match is to ensure that his or her heart beat is okay so that there would not be a situation where a boxer will slump during the boxing bout “
“The boxer died of heart failure due to the negligent of the Ghanaians boxing authority which failed to do the needful before the boxing match” Dr Ladipo observed.
The President posited that the boxer was also on his way to Nigeria when he was called back on phone for the fight and this shows that he was mentally and physically unfit for the boxing bout where he eventually lost his life.
“ You do not put a boxer who has just returned from a journey and whom you do not know his or her health status in boxing bout” he submitted “ he noted.
“This is what happened to Success Olanrewaju before the boxing bout in question where Ghanaians threw him into the match without the necessary precautions before a match can take place”, he added.
