The Oyo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Commandant Augustine Padonu has said the command has commenced investigation into the cause of the explosion in order to unravel the cause of the tragic and sad occurrence in the accient city.
It will be recalled that on Tuesday evening, the city of Ibadan experienced a harrowing explosion that shook the ground, following a blast which left behind a trail of destruction and devastation.
According to a release by the Public Relation Officer, (PRO), DSC Samuel Opebiyi said investigation remains ongoing, adding that witnesses , testimonies are contributing valuable details.
He said a resident of one of the apartments at the epicenter of the explosion, in an interview, reported observing suspicious activity involving a tenant who frequently arrived and departed late at night, and who sublet the apartment to others.
Said he, “The blast, which struck on Tuesday around 7:45 PM in the densely populated Bodija neighborhood, is currently under investigation, with initial reports suggesting the cause might be linked to the illegal storage of explosive materials.
“At least two lives were tragically lost in this incident, with 77 individuals who sustained various injuries of varying severity.
Padonu said the explosion, centered around two duplex buildings on Adeyi Avenue, which caused significant damage, Windows shattered, roofs caved in, and walls crumbled, leaving many residents displaced. “The sheer force of the blast left a 24-foot crater at the epicenter, highlighting the immense power of the explosion.”
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the NSCDC boss immediately deployed specialized units including the Disaster Management Unit, Mines and Steel Department, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive Department, Counter Terrorism Unit, and Operation Department to the scene.
“These units, alongside emergency responders from NEMA, OYSEMA, the Red Cross, Federal and State Fire Services, medical personnel, and other partner agencies, swiftly descended upon the scene. Security agencies swiftly cordoned off the area to ensure public safety and facilitate rescue efforts.
“The State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, personally visited the blast site to express his condolences to the affected families and pledge full support of government in recovering and rebuilding efforts. He vowed to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
“As of today, the investigation into the cause of the explosion remains ongoing. Witness testimonies, are contributing valuable details. “These accounts are being carefully analyzed alongside forensic evidence to piece together the events leading to the tragedy.
He said a secure perimeter has been established around the blast site, restricting access to authorized personnel only.
This measure according to him is to ensure the integrity of the investigation and protects the public from potential hazards.
Padonu urged the public to cooperate with security personnel and remain vigilant to report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.
He further stressed that “While the aftermath of this tragedy is deeply felt, the spirit of Ibadan remains strong. The NSCDC, alongside our partner agencies and the unwavering support of the state government, is committed to providing unwavering security support to affected residents and their families.
“We stand united in the face of this adversity, confident in our ability to rebuild with resilience and determination.”
